A former soldier spends his days drifting through London until one day, he is taken in by a kind nun. She accommodates him in an old dilapidated building and asks him to fix it up. Living in it are a young woman and her terminally ill mother, who cannot (or will not or may not) leave the attic. While the walls and flooring are slowly rotting, the soldier’s wartime traumas come creeping to the fore, unleashing a cruel game of guilt and absolution. Amulet is a precisely calibrated horror drama whose deceptively simple surface belies complex subject matters—qualities that herald feature-length first-timer Romola Garai as a new talent in the genre.
