When word gets out about Ayşe’s affair, her enraged husband shoots her lover, while she manages to escape by the skin of her teeth. The family sends a whole slew of henchmen after the young woman, who tries to get to Istanbul in hopes of finding a place to hide. Emre Akay’s takes the hot-button issue of honor killing and the toxic patriarchy that feeds this custom to construct a relentless whirlwind of a genre piece that takes cues from survival- and revenge-thrillers and is pivoted on an outstanding lead performance by Billur Melis Koç. As fast-paced as it is relevant, Av: The Hunt is one of this season’s most potent white-knuckle edge-of-your-seaters: buckle up!
