Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on The Exorcist

Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on The Exorcist | Alexandre O. Philippe | US 2019 | 104 Min | DCP

Some people you just have to plop into a chair and let talk. The Canadian Alexandre O. Philippe, who became known for his formally eccentric documentaries about the cult movies Psycho and Alien, chooses exactly this approach of utmost reduction in his take on William Friedkin. A titan of New Hollywood cinema and still sharp, strong-willed, and provocative in his mid-eighties, talks for just under two hours about the production of what may be his most famous film, The Exorcist. The monolog is peppered with unforgettable (and pretty wild) anecdotes and saturated with this exceptional artist’s charisma and gravitas. Film history, as good as it gets!

Alexandre O. Philippe
holds an MFA in Dramatic Writing from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and is Creative Director at Exhibit A Pictures. Most of his films take on the role of unpacking the most influential works of master filmmakers and dissecting seminal screen moments. Past works include The People vs. George Lucas (2010), Doc of the Dead (2014), 78/52 (2017), and MEMORY: The Origins of Alien (2019), which was screened at the SLASH 2019.
